Trenton Police took Freddie Simmons, 49, of Ewing, into custody and charged him, assault by auto, and reckless driving and DUI after his axle broke off and smashed into a police car.

According to police, the accident occurred on Olden Avenue where police spotted Simmons speeding when he lost control and struck a pole on Ohio Avenue.

Police said the impact had the suspect's vehicle's rear axle disconnect from the car and struck the front of a police car that was going in the opposite direction.
