Assemblyman Chigozie Onyema is inviting community members to participate in a virtual Know Your Rights training designed to help residents better understand their legal protections and prepare for potential interactions with immigration authorities.

The online event will take place Monday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m. and is being organized in partnership with several community organizations, including Coalition for Rights of Asylum Seekers and New Americans (CRAN), New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice (NJAIJ), SOMA Action, Essex County Young Democrats, Maplewood Democrats, and Unified Vailsburg Services Organization.
During the session, participants will learn what to do if ICE agents come to their home or workplace, how to respond if they are stopped in public, how to identify valid warrants, and how to create a family preparedness plan.

Organizers say the training is open to immigrants, allies, and community members who want to stay informed and help ensure their families and neighborhoods remain safe.

The virtual session aims to provide practical information and empower residents with the knowledge they need to understand and exercise their constitutional rights.
