A Kinder Halloween: Sensory-Friendly Celebrations Come to New Jersey

New Jersey

Halloween is often filled with flashing lights, loud music, and bustling crowds, but for many children, especially those with sensory challenges, that can make the holiday overwhelming instead of fun.

Bierman Autism Centers is a trusted leader in autism care, dedicated to helping children with autism grow, play, and thrive.

Since 2006, Bierman has been transforming lives through

play-based, individualized ABA therapy, empowering children to build essential skills like self-advocacy, communication, and independence.

This October, families in New Jersey will have a different option: free sensory-friendly Trunk-or-Treat events in Berkeley Heights, Ramsey, and Princeton.

Built for children ages 2 to 9, the celebrations are designed to be safe, calm, and inclusive.

Siblings, friends, and caregivers are welcome, and admission is free with an RSVP encouraged due to space.

Each event features trick-or-treat stations with no strobe lights or blasting music, quiet areas for breaks, and costume-friendly zones where dressing up is optional.

Games and crafts are built into the experience, turning play into opportunities for learning and growth.

Organizers say the goal is to let kids enjoy the spirit of Halloween in a way that feels comfortable for them.

As one leader put it: “Halloween should be about joy and imagination, not stress or sensory overload. These events create that magic moment where kids can just be kids.”

The hosts behind these celebrations have a long track record of supporting children with autism through play-based approaches that focus on building communication, independence, and confidence.

Beyond just candy and costumes, the events are designed to give families lasting memories of belonging and joy.
