Kearny Police Warn Residents of PSEG Scam

Kearny

Police are warning Kearny residents of a new scam involving PSE&G accounts.

According to authorities, residents are being contacted by unknown individuals who are allegedly attempting to collect past due PSEG balances and then asking customers to pay at Pay Depot machines.

Officials say the individuals send a QR code (picture attached not actual QR code) and advise the victims to scan it at the machine and deposit the cash. However, officials warn residents that once the transaction is completed, the cash is gone and it is impossible to recover/trace.

Authorities advise residents that although there is at least one Pay Depot machine in Kearny, these machine are only used to buy and sell bitcoin.

In addition, officials warn residents not to purchase google play cards, green dot cards, or any other pre-paid card with cash and provide the numbers to anyone over the telephone that you do not know.

When in doubt contact the police department before conducting such a transaction.
