A Kearny man surrendered to police Thursday morning following an incident involving reported gunfire that prompted a significant law enforcement response and perimeter near Webster Avenue.

to information released by the Kearny Police Department in coordination with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, officers were dispatched to a residence on Webster Avenue, north of West Bennett Avenue, at approximately 9:16 a.m. after a 911 caller reported hearing shots fired.

As officers took positions near the residence, authorities said an additional gunshot was heard.

No residents or police officers were injured.

Police secured the area, established a perimeter and began negotiations with the individual inside the residence.

After a period of time, Thomas J. Romano, 57, of Kearny, surrendered to police. Authorities said Romano was also the subject of an unrelated arrest warrant.

Police said there was no active shooter or ongoing threat to the general public, but the perimeter remained in place as investigators continued their work.

Residents were asked to avoid Webster Avenue near West Bennett Avenue until police activity concluded.

The Kearny Police Department thanked the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team and other assisting agencies for their response.

The incident remains under investigation.
