Jersey City's St. Peter's College Advances to March Madness Sweet 16 After Upsetting Murray State

Jersey City

March Madness No. 15-seed St. Peter's College Peacocks continued their march into victory with the underdogs upsetting the seventh-seeded Murray State, 70-60 Saturday night.

The small Jesuit colleges made history again before a sellout crowd of 17,838 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to advance to the Sweet 16.

According to the NY Post, only twice before had a 15th seed reached the Sweet 16 — Florida Gulf Coast in 2013 and Oral Roberts last year. Saint Peter's is the third.

How did Saint Peter's (21-11), an eight-point underdog to bigger and stronger Murray State (31-3) after it was an 18-point' dog against Kentucky, do it?

"With grit, physicality, fearlessness and a toughness that Murray State never imagined it would have to deal with for 40 minutes.

The Peacocks played the Racers as if they were in a street fight and looked beautifully comfortable doing so," New York Times sports journalist Mark Cannizzaro said.

A college with under 3000 undergraduates, Saint Peter's University said they are committed to individual attention and grounding in the liberal arts, educates a diverse community of learners in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs to excel intellectually, lead ethically, serve compassionately and promote justice in our ever-changing urban and global environment.
