Irvington Man Arrested After Openly Carrying Semi-Automatic Handgun

A 26-year-old Irvington man, openly carrying a semi-automatic handgun, was arrested Monday night, according to Essex County Sheriff Armando.

Officials say detectives assigned to the Essex County Sheriff's Bureau of Narcotics were doing proactive patrols and surveillance in the First Precinct when Nafis Kedar, 26,  was observed exiting a building on South 6th Street with a semi-automatic weapon in his hand.

According to authorities, Kedar attempted to conceal the gun and retreat into the house when he spotted the detectives but was quickly apprehend.

Police charged him with unlawful possession of a stolen handgun and possession of the drug Ecstasy.

"This was an area where the public has complained about armed drug dealers," Fontoura said. "We responded to their concerns about the drugs and violence in the area, and that response got results."

The Essex County Sheriff's Bureau of Narcotic is made up of detectives from the Newark and Bloomfield police departments.
