Police in Newark announced the arrests of Mr. Alexander Saye, 22, of Irvington, Mr. Naszir Mitchell, 21, of Hillside, and two Newark juveniles for separate incidents of robbery.
According to a statement released by police, Alexander Saye faces charges of robbery and conspiracy in four separate robberies that occurred on Friday, January 24th, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10:20 p.m.
Police say in each incident, the suspect exited a vehicle before approaching the victim.
In the first incident, a man was approached in the area of Lang Street and New York Avenue and robbed of his personal property. A woman was approached by the two suspects in the 100 block of Chestnut Street. She screamed and the suspect fled the scene after entering a vehicle.
According to police, the third incident occurred at 9 Napoleon Street, where two men were robbed by a suspect who exited a vehicle and stole a bag containing a laptop from one of the victims before fleeing in the car. In the last incident, police say a man was robbed in the 200 block of Van Buren Street by two males who exited a vehicle and stole his personal property.
Detectives investigating these robberies identified Alexander Saye as a suspect. Officers arrested him the following day.
According to police, Naszir Mitchell was arrested on January 26th after robbery detectives identified him in connection with three robberies involving stabbing assaults against some of the victims.
According to Newark Police, at approximately 2 p.m., Saturday, January 25, a man and woman were approached by two male suspects who stole the woman’s purse before stabbing her in her back.
Police say the man was attacked by the suspects, who struck him and threw him to the ground before stealing his personal property. The two victims arrived at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for treatment.
At 10:40 p.m., on Saturday, January 25, a man was approached by two males who exited a vehicle in the 800 block of Summer Avenue and stabbed him and reached into his pockets.
Police say the victim arrived at University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., on Sunday, January 26, a woman was approached by two males in the 100 block of Gotthart Street. The suspects stole her personal property and stabbed her multiple times in the back.
The victim arrived at University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives investigating these robberies identified Mitchell, who faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy.
Two male juveniles, a 17-year-old and a 16-year old, each face charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a prohibited weapon (large-capacity magazine) robbery, possession of marijuana and conspiracy after being arrested for two robberies.
On Thursday, January 23, 2020, the juvenile suspects used the Instagram social media app to lure the victims to a residence in the 400 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard by posing as a female offering a date. The first male victim arrived at the location at noon and was robbed at gunpoint of personal property. The second male victim arrived at the location at 8 p.m. and was also robbed at gunpoint of his personal property.
Detectives investigating these incidents identified the two juveniles, who were arrested on January 24th without incident.
“I commend the members of the Newark Police Division’s Robbery Unit for their determinate and swift work that led to these four arrests,” Director Ambrose said.
These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
