Irvington Fire Officials Investigate Three-Alarm Building Fire

Irvington Township

Firefighters in Irvington battled a multi-alarm fire that tore through a large mixed-used building in the Township on Tuesday night.

According to preliminary reports, firefighters were called to 889 Springfield Avenue -near Bruen Street- to investigate several 911 calls reporting fire inside a building just before 10 p.m.

Irvington firefighters, with mutual assistance from several municipalities, arrived at the scene and found heavy fire coming from the first and second floors of the three-story building, which housed a grocery store on the ground level.

Officials say firefighters stretched several lines and began to attack the flames from the exterior before making their way inside to find the seat of the fire.

Crews were able to knock down intense stubborn flames that raced to the upper floors and ultimately through the roof.

Firefighters managed to search the building for traped and injured occupants, which came back negative, according to Irvington fire officials.

The fire was aced under control in under an hour with the cause under investigation.
