Illegal Dumping Incident Leads to Arrest of Newark Men

Newark

Authorities announced the arrest of Jose A. Ruiz, 49, and Hector M. Benitez, 60, both of Newark, for an incident of illegal dumping on Wednesday.

According to officials, at approximately 7 p.m., members of the Illegal Dumping Task Force observed the suspects tossing construction debris from their vehicle onto the sidewalk and on the street in the area of Verona Avenue and McCarter Highway.

Police officials say when detectives approached one, of the suspects, he fled on foot but was quickly apprehended without further incident.

Authorities ultimately arrested both men then charged them with illegal dumping and illegal transport of solid waste.

In addition, police say Benitez was charged with resisting arrest and having an outstanding warrant.

Police said their vehicle was subsequently towed and could be forfeited.

The Illegal Dumping Task Force has made over 37 arrests thus far this year.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
