A federal immigration agent was injured Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to take an individual into custody in Ocean County, authorities said.
According to Stafford Township Police, the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in the Manahawkin section of the township.
Police said an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was attempting to apprehend an individual when the person allegedly fled in a vehicle, striking the agent in the process.
Authorities said the agent discharged his firearm at the fleeing vehicle, reportedly striking it.
The driver continued from the scene, and it remains unclear whether the individual was injured.
The injured agent was treated at the scene and transported for medical care. Officials have not released information regarding the extent of the agent’s injuries.
Images circulating online showed the agent seated on the ground near a vehicle before being placed on a stretcher by emergency responders.
Authorities have not disclosed why the individual was being sought or whether an arrest has since been made.
The incident remains under investigation.
