House Fire Kills One in Newark's South Ward

Newark Fire Officials are investigating a fire that killed one person inside a house in the city's South Ward late Saturday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire that ignited inside a home located at 12 Yates Avenue at around 11:15 p.m.

Crews arrived at the scene and found fire coming from the second floor of a two and a half story wood framed house at that location.

Firefighters were able to knock the blaze down in a less that a half hours but a search of the residence indicated one unconscious and unresponsive person on the top floor according to reports.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives for The Essex County Prosecutor's Office were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The official cause of death has not been determined at this time.
