As of early Wednesday, temperatures in downtown Newark hovered around 73 degrees.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the area, warning of a high near 92 degrees. The weather is expected to remain mostly sunny through the first half of the day, but conditions will shift dramatically by the afternoon.

Forecasters say there's a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., followed by a higher likelihood of stronger storms after 5 p.m.

Some of these late-day storms could become severe, bringing gusty winds, heavy downpours, and thunder.

Tonight, the threat of showers and thunderstorms continues through approximately 2 a.m., with temperatures dropping to a low around 67 degrees.

As Juneteenth is observed across the country, with many businesses and government offices closed, officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
