On Monday, June 9, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Hillside High School will host the Lumi Showcase, an event highlighting the creative achievements of 21 middle school students who have utilized the Lumi AI platform to craft original comic books and graphic novels.

Hillside Public School officials told RLS Media in a statement that students from Walter O. Krumbiegel Middle School and Hillside Innovation Academy, known as the Student Illuminators, have been working with Lumi, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence tool designed to democratize storytelling by assisting users in developing, illustrating, and publishing their narratives.
This initiative stems from a partnership established in February 2025 between Hillside Public Schools and Colin Kaepernick, the founder of Lumi.
According to published reports, Lumi, launched by Kaepernick in 2024, aims to empower creators by providing accessible tools for storytelling, particularly in the realms of comic books and graphic novels.
Reports said the platform addresses common barriers in the creative process, such as high production costs and limited access to publishing avenues, by offering AI-assisted features that help users bring their stories to life.
Officials said the upcoming showcase at Hillside High School’s auditorium and media center will allow the Student Illuminators to present their AI-generated projects to the community, demonstrating the potential of integrating technology with creative education.
