VIDEO: Heavy Rain Floods The Garden State Parkway in Irvington Township
A torrential rainstorm that passed through northern New Jersey flooded out a major NJ Highway that runs through a portion of Essex County. This evening.
Irvington Township firefighters responded to about a dozen rescue calls over a two-hour period on Wednesday evening as a torrential downpour flooded multiple roadways and left some drivers stranded in the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway near exit 143.
Bucket loads of rain dropped from the sky ultimately stranding motorist for hours while firefighters entered knee-deep water to retrieve motorists from their vehicles in the middle and far left lanes of the highway.
At one point, the off-ramp to 143 was covered in at least two to three feet of water according to reports.
A tow truck driver who spoke with RLS Media said that firefighters rescued about three people from vehicles on the highway that were immobilized in water.
Multiple locations in Newark experienced heavy flooding and firefighters from all wards assisted in rescue operations.
