In New Jersey, a crippling heat wave has led to early school dismissals and health warnings for area residents.
The New Jersey Department of Emergency Management issued the following statement in light of the dangerous temperatures expected for today.
"Summer is a few days away, but we have a hot day in store for Monday, with temperatures rising into the 90s from New York City north and west. A Heat Advisory is in effect for Northeast New Jersey as well as parts of Central and South Jersey. Heat index values are expected to be around 100 in the afternoon. These temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and populations vulnerable to excessive heat. Know the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. You just may save a life! “
It's especially dangerous for the homeless community that often lacks information on cooling centers or groups available to assist them during these sweltering days.
The City of Elizabeth, in anticipation of today’s heat, has assigned four recreation centers as cooling centers.

Just shortly after 4 p.m., EMS were called to Broad Street and Caldwell Place for a report of an unconscious homeless man. Passerbys could be seen assisting the man by providing him with water and wet paper to cool his face while paramedics arrived.
There were no serious injuries reported to the man.
