After a stretch of cooler, comfortable weather, Newark and much of North Jersey are bracing for a blast of extreme summer heat, with forecasters warning of dangerous conditions as the day progresses.
As of 4:30 a.m., temperatures already hovered around 78 degrees with humid air thickening the atmosphere along South Orange Avenue and Stuyvesant Avenue in Newark's West Ward.
The National Weather Service predicts a high near 98 degrees, but the heat index , which factors in humidity, could make it feel as hot as 106 degrees.

Skies are currently clear, but the oppressive heat is expected to intensify through the morning. Relief may arrive later in the day, as showers and strong thunderstorms are likely after 5 p.m.
Forecasters estimate a 60% chance of precipitation, which could help break the heat temporarily.
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak hours, and check on vulnerable individuals such as seniors and those without air conditioning.
Stay cool and safe, New Jersey.
