Heat Builds Before Storms Arrive Sunday Evening in Newark

Newark

Good morning, New Jersey!

We're in for another warm and humid day as temperatures climb into the lower 90s across the region.

The heat and humidity that have been building over the past several days will help create conditions favorable for strong to potentially severe thunderstorms later today.

If you're heading to early Sunday services or spending time outdoors this morning, be sure to dress for the heat, stay hydrated, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

However, if your plans keep you out later in the day, it would be wise to bring an umbrella or poncho as storms are expected to develop and move through the area.

As of this morning, temperatures in downtown Newark were around 70 degrees with light winds near 6 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, skies will become increasingly cloudy throughout the day with a high temperature near 92 degrees.

Southwest winds will increase to 9 to 14 mph, with gusts reaching as high as 24 mph.

Tonight, there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m., followed by a greater likelihood of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Additional showers may linger after 2 a.m.

Overnight temperatures will fall to around 65 degrees. Winds will shift from the south to the west after midnight, with gusts up to 24 mph possible.

The chance of precipitation is 80 percent, with rainfall totals between one-quarter and one-half inch possible.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates throughout the day and be prepared to seek shelter if severe weather warnings are issued.
