HEALTH ALERT: NJ Department of Health Releases County by County Facts on Hepatitis A Outbreak

According to information released by NJ Health Department officials, since December 2018, the New Jersey Department of Health has been investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A.

Officials say Hepatitis A can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months.

Although uncommon, hepatitis A can cause death. People who are older or have health

conditions, including hepatitis C, are at higher risk of dying from hepatitis A.

The populations most affected by the outbreak are those with recent experiences of homelessness or unstable housing, substance use disorder, men who have sex with men (MSM) and/or incarceration.

Officials say this report, which is updated weekly, summarizes outbreakā€associated cases.
