HBO Documentary Star Wanted for Nephew's Murder, Kills Himself Before Being Arrested

An incarcerated gang member who snuck a video camera into prison in an effort to document the use of excessive force and corruption among the institution's guards killed himdelf while police were attempting to arrest him for murder.

Police said 35-year-old Omar Broadway of Newark was wanted for the murdering his nephew.

Polie said Broadway, was wanted for the May 4, 2017 shooting death of Najee Broadway, 18, also from Newark.

The younger Broadway’s body was found on Marie Place in Newark suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

An investigation by the Essex County Major Crimes Task Force, led to charges being filed against Omar Broadway and Kenneth Durant, age 36, of Newark.

Detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office and agents assigned to the FBI Fugitive Task Force developed information that Omar Broadway was in a residence on Andrew Court in Bloomfield.

As authorities surrounded the building, Omar Broadway apparently shot himself in the basement of the house. Detectives entered the residence and attempted to render first aid.

Broadway was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:45 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, who added that a handgun was found next to Broadway’s body.

Omar Broadway’s body was taken to the NJ Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.

Durant, the other suspect wanted

for this homicide remains at large, according to Fennelly.
