Hawthorne Man Charged with Violent Assault that Left Victim Critically Injured

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora announce that based upon an investigation conducted by the Paterson Police Department, Mr. Tyheem T. Jones, 37, from Hawthorne was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder, First Degree in relation to an investigation that commenced earlier today.

Officials say at approximately 4:00 a.m. today, members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Auburn Street and Godwin Avenue on reports of an assault in progress.

Upon arrival officers observed Tyheem T. Jones pacing back and forth in the middle of the street while breathing heavily and sweating profusely.

Police observed Mr. Jones looking in the direction of a pair of sneakers by a motor vehicle.

When police approached the motor vehicle, they located a male victim lying on the ground with a large gash on the right side of his head.

The victim was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson for treatment and is in critical condition.

Currently, the victim remains unidentified. Based on the investigation Tyheem T. Jones was arrested and taken into custody.

The sentencing exposure for Mr. Jones on First Degree Attempted Murder it is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision.

The State intends to file a motion for pretrial detention that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
