A 41-year-old Hackensack man has been arrested in connection with a violent assault on a woman who was walking home from a bus stop in Newark last month.

According to information released by Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., Lee Darryl Harris was taken into custody following an investigation into the September 18, 2026, attack.

Police said the victim had just finished work and was walking home around 1:30 a.m. when she noticed a man watching and following her.

As she approached her apartment in the 200 block of Leslie Street, the suspect allegedly came up behind her and repeatedly punched her in the face and body while ordering her to remain quiet.

The woman fought back and screamed for help, prompting her attacker to flee, authorities said.

Newark detectives identified Harris as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant charging him with aggravated assault and criminal trespass.

Director Miranda described the attack as deeply disturbing and credited investigators for their efforts in locating Harris, who was arrested without incident.

Miranda expressed hope that the arrest would provide the victim some comfort as she continues recovering from the attack.
