Gunshot Victim 'Gravely' Injured in Newark West Ward Shooting

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified of a shooting that caused severe injuries in a section of Newark's West Ward Sunday. 

The early morning shooting happened around 12:40 near 595 15th Avenue, where police responded to several reports of shots fired. 

Officers arrived and found a severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive person suffering bullet wounds at that location. 

The unidentified victim was rushed to University Hospital, where doctors began treating life-threatening gunshot wounds. 

As of 3:30 a.m., our staff could not officially get a confirmation of a fatality. 

According to officials, Rutgers Police and Essex County Sheriff's Officers were called to the hospital as the victim's family and friends arrived in large numbers. 

The motive for the attack is under investigation. Police say the gunman fled on foot.
