By rlsmetro on

Elizabeth Police has announced an investigation into a shots-fired incident outside a Masjid in the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Police officials would only say that there is an active investigation into the incident, but according to witnesses, just before 1:15 p.m., mourners attending a Janazah at the Masjid Dar-Ul Islam for **[a man fatally shot outside an Elizabeth Hotel](** said masked shooters arrived at the Salem Avenue location and began to fire shots in the direction of a crowd of people.

Multiple Police officers raced to the scene and found shell casings in the area, but no victims were reported.

Witnesses told RLS Media that it appeared that gunmen were focused on several males who were attending the Janazah while others ran for cover.

The Janazah was for Mr. Patrick Shukla, 26, who was approached by gunmen at the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson located on International Boulevard then shot dead in the parking lot.

Police would not confirm if the shooting during the funeral service is connected to Shukla's homicide, which is under an active and ongoing investigation by the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

Request for information left for officials at Masjid Dar-Ul Islam went unanswered and Elizabeth Police officials said an investigation is underway.
