Gunfire Strikes One Victim in Newark's South Ward

Newark

Newark Police officials are investigating a shooting incident that injured a person in the city's South Ward Thursday night.

According to police, a ShotSpotter device activated and alerted police of gunfire that rang out in the 40's block of Fabyan Place shortly before 10:35 p.m.

Units arrived at the scene found several shell casings and a gunshot victim suffering non-fatal injuries. Police say the unidentified victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment.

According to police, witnesses reported that a dark-colored vehicle -possibly a Toyota Camry- with NY license plates was observed speeding from the scene.

Police reportedly caught up with that vehicle on Somerset Street in the city's Central Ward and took one person into custody. The suspect is also believed to have been involved in an armed carjacking that occurred in the city.

A weapon was recovered from the vehicle, according to reports.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
