Newark

Authorities are investigating a shots-fired incident that sent families and parkgoers scrambling for safety Saturday evening at Weequahic Park.

According to a statement released by the Newark Department of Public Safety, multiple rounds were fired inside the park on June 20, prompting a response from law enforcement and creating a chaotic scene as parents rushed to gather their children and seek cover near playground areas.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. said the incident is currently being investigated by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials noted that misinformation circulating on social media suggested multiple people had been struck by gunfire.

However, investigators have not located any shooting victims, no individuals have come forward reporting injuries, and no victims connected to the incident have arrived at area hospitals for treatment.

Video obtained by RLS Media indicate that more than a dozen rounds were fired during the incident, though authorities have not released details regarding what led to the gunfire.

As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been announced, and investigators have not released information regarding potential suspects.

The investigation remains active, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
