Gunfire Erupts on Belleville-Newark Border

Police in Newark’s North Ward detained one individual Friday afternoon following a shots fired incident near the Newark–Belleville border, authorities said.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. when a ShotSpotter device was activated in the area of Manchester Place and North Magnolia Lane. 

 

Officers from the Newark Police Department responded to the area and located evidence indicating that gunfire had occurred.
 

By the time officers arrived, the suspected shooter had already fled the scene. 

 

Police canvassed the surrounding neighborhood and later encountered a suspect, who led officers on a brief pursuit.

The chase ended in the area of 281 Belmont Avenue, where the individual was taken into custody without further incident.

 

Detectives continued to examine the original shooting scene, but authorities said no victims were immediately located. 

 

No injuries have been reported at this time.

 

The motive for the shooting remains under active investigation, and officials have not released additional details.
