Guilty Plea for Paterson Man who Left the Scene of a Crash that Caused Severe Injuries

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces the entry of a guilty plea in the matter of State of New Jersey v. Clinton Smith, Jr.

Officials said Mr. Smith pled guilty today to Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Involving Serious Bodily Injury, a third-degree crime, before the Honorable Sohail Mohammed, P.J.Cr.

He admitted under oath that he struck a pedestrian on December 5, 2020, while driving a motor vehicle near 10th Avenue and East 23rd Street in the City of Paterson.

Officials said Smith also admitted that, after striking the pedestrian, he did not stop to render aid as required by law. The pedestrian, a 49-year-old man from Paterson, suffered serious bodily injury.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, the State will be recommending Mr. Smith be placed on a period of probation with the condition that he serve 364 days in the county jail.

An October 1, 2021 sentence date has been set before the Honorable Sohail Mohammed, P.J.Cr. The State is represented by Senior Assistant Prosecutor Julie Serfess. Mr. Smith Jr. is represented by Harley Breite, Esq.
