Grand Jury Declines to Indict Truck Driver for Crash that Killed Waldwick Cop

Waldwick

Today, the matter of State v. Ryon Cumberbatch was presented to a Bergen County Grand Jury. This matter arose out of allegations that Mr. Cumberbatch recklessly operated his commercial tractor trailer causing the death of Waldwick Police Officer Christopher Goodell on or about July 17, 2014.

This is to advise that the Bergen County Grand Jury declined to indict Mr. Cumberbatch, 31, of Brooklyn, NY, on the vehicular homicide charges.

The motor vehicle summonses issued to Cumberbatch charging him with reckless driving & failure to maintain a proper lane will be returned to be heard in the Waldwick Municipal Court.

While a disappointing outcome, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli would like to thank the grand jurors for their work in this case. Grand jurors serve a critical function in our judicial process and their diligence in this, and all matters, is greatly appreciated.

Prosecutor Molinelli would also like to once again express his deepest sympathies to the Goodell Family, the Waldwick Police Department and the people of Waldwick on Officer Goodell’s passing. On what must be a very difficult day and time of year, our prayers and thoughts are with them all.
