A state grand jury has voted not to file criminal charges against police officers involved in the fatal shooting of 46-year-old Karl Gregory of New York City during a confrontation last year at the Royal Albert’s Palace Hotel in Woodbridge.

The New Jersey Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) announced that after reviewing evidence, including hotel surveillance, police body-worn camera footage, eyewitness testimony, and ballistics reports, the jury returned a “no bill” decision on August 29, 2025.

This means the grand jury found no cause to pursue charges against Woodbridge Officers Drew Krupinski and Justin Nerney or NYPD Detective Matthew Mauro, who exchanged gunfire with Gregory.

According to investigators, the incident stemmed from a New York City shooting in June 2024 that left a victim critically injured.

Gregory’s vehicle was flagged in Edison by an automated license plate reader, leading local officers to track it to the Woodbridge hotel. NYPD detectives joined the investigation the following day.

Shortly after midnight on June 13, 2024, Gregory exited a hotel elevator carrying multiple bags.

Authorities said he dropped them and reached into a black backpack, pulling out a handgun despite repeated commands to show his hands.

Gunfire erupted for roughly 20 seconds inside the lobby, leaving Gregory fatally wounded.

Officers Nerney and Mauro were also struck but later recovered from their injuries.
