A state grand jury has decided not to pursue criminal charges against a New Jersey State Police staff sergeant following the death of a 20-year-old Virginia man who was killed in a high-speed crash in Hunterdon County last year.

According to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, the grand jury voted “no bill” after reviewing evidence connected to the October 18, 2024, crash that claimed the life of Scott Segreaves Jr., of Zuni, Virginia.
The decision was reached after deliberations concluded on December 15, 2025.
The investigation was conducted by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability and presented to a grand jury in accordance with New Jersey’s Independent Prosecutor Directive.
Jurors reviewed extensive evidence, including body-worn camera footage, vehicle data, surveillance video, dispatch recordings, crash reports, and medical examiner findings.
Investigators determined that Segreaves was driving at extremely high speeds while being briefly pursued for a speeding violation by Staff Sergeant Nicholas Pryszlak of the New Jersey State Police.
Authorities said the trooper discontinued the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle.
Moments later, Segreaves lost control of his car while traveling more than 100 miles per hour, left the roadway, struck multiple trees, and overturned.
Police were later alerted to the crash through an automated emergency message sent from Segreaves’ cellphone.
He was found ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After reviewing all testimony and evidence, the grand jury determined that criminal charges were not warranted.
The Attorney General’s Office said the presentation was conducted in a neutral and transparent manner, consistent with statewide procedures.
