Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a homicide that occurred at a gas station in Newark on Monday afternoon.
According to authorities, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to a reported shooting in the 400 block of West Market Street.
Police said arriving officers found an unresponsive male at the Power Gas Station at this location.
The victim was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:42 pm, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
Authorities identified ther victim as Davinder Singh, age 47 of Iselin, according to Fennelly, who added that the victim was the proprietor of the gas station.
This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
