An explosion at a Newark home Saturday afternoon injured three people and forced nearby residents to evacuate as emergency crews worked to secure the area.

According to a statement released by Director Emanuel Miranda, police and firefighters responded at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, to 86 Magazine Street after reports of an explosion.

Authorities said construction workers were performing work on a water line when a gas line was accidentally struck, triggering an explosion.

The blast caused the front façade of the home to partially blow outward, sending siding into the street and shattering several windows.

Two juveniles, ages 15 and 16, along with a construction worker, were transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials reported no additional injuries.

Emergency crews also evacuated approximately 15 dogs from the backyard of a neighboring property during the incident.

Residents in nearby homes were temporarily evacuated as crews worked to secure the scene.

Utility company PSE&G is handling repairs to the damaged gas line.

Authorities said the area will remain restricted until repairs are completed and it is deemed safe for residents to return.
