Funeral Services Announced for Newark Police Detective Irving Callender who Passed Away Due to Coronavirus Complications

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announce that the funeral services for Newark Police Detective Irving Callender, 43, who succumbed to Coronavirus complications, will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, August 30th at Shabazz High School Football Field, 80 Johnson Avenue, Newark, NJ.

Visitation will be held between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., also on Sunday, August 30th, at Shabazz High School Football Field. Attendees will enter on Hillside Avenue at West Alpine Street.

Internment, to immediately follow the funeral service, will be held at Hollywood Memorial Park, 1500 Stuyvesant Avenue, Union, NJ.

Detective Callender began his law enforcement career as a Police Officer assigned to the 5th Precinct in March 2006. He also faithfully served at the 2nd Precinct, in the Street Crimes Unit and in other assignments before joining Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s Executive Protection Unit in 2014.

Detective Callender was the husband of Melissa N. Callender and father of two sons, Irving Robert Samuel Callender, IV and Camren Mehki Callender. He also served as a father figure to his niece, Kimani Zaniyah Thomas. He will be sorely missed.

Dignitaries from local, county and state agencies have been invited to attend.
