The city of Newark will come together one last time in mourning today as the funeral arrangements for firefighter Wayne "Bears" Brooks Jr. will be held at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in the North Ward beginning at 10 a.m.

Firefighter Brooks, a 16-year veteran of the department, tragically lost his life while battling a fierce and relentless fire onboard the cargo ship Grande Costa D'avorio which carried over 5,000 cars and was en route to West Africa.

Known for his passion for the Chicago Bears football team, Brooks was not only an exceptional firefighter but also a devoted father to his two daughters, who recently graduated from college.

He was a loving and caring presence in their lives. His dedication to his family mirrored his dedication to his community and his line of firefighting work. That's why we dedicate our morning platform and salute this awesome public servant.

Firefighter Brooks will be laid to rest with full honors, surrounded by hundreds of firefighters from across the county who will join in the funeral procession.

On Thursday, the firefighting community gathered to bid farewell to Brooks' partner, firefighter Augusto "Augie" Acabou, who also lost his life in the same tragic incident.

The loss of two brave firefighters has profoundly impacted the Newark community and city, state, and officials nationwide, assuring their memories will forever be cherished.

During the cargo ship fire, five other firefighters were injured, highlighting the dangers and risks these brave men and women face daily. Their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property is a testament to their courage and dedication.
