According to a statement released by the U.S. Marshals Service, Adan Lemus, 49, was taken into custody Thursday in Schenectady by members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Lemus was originally arrested in 2013 on charges related to criminal sexual contact involving the alleged use of force.

After being released on bond, he failed to appear in court in 2014, prompting a warrant for his arrest.

Authorities say he then fled the state and spent years evading law enforcement.

Investigators determined Lemus remained on the run for approximately 12 years, avoiding contact with authorities during that time. His arrest followed a coordinated effort involving the U.S. Marshals, Long Hill Police Department, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials said Lemus is currently being held at the Schenectady County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to New Jersey to face the charges.

Authorities noted that the case highlights ongoing efforts to locate fugitives, even years after they flee.
