Four Newark Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze at Vacant Building

Four of Newark’s bravest  firefighters were injured early Thursday morning while responding to a blaze at a vacant building on Cypress Street, officials said.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 3:28 a.m. for a report of a fire at 50 Cypress Street. 

A second alarm was sounded just over ten minutes later, at 3:39 a.m., as crews worked to bring the flames under control.

 

During the operation, a chimney collapsed, injuring four firefighters. 

All were transported to University Hospital for treatment and are reportedly in stable condition.
 

Authorities said the building was unoccupied, and no relocations were necessary. 

The fire was declared under control at 4:31 a.m.

The cause and origin of the blaze remain under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.
