Essex County Prosecutor’s Office officials have confirmed that four individuals are now in custody and charged with murder in connection with last month’s deadly shooting on Chancellor Avenue in Newark’s South Ward — an attack that claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy.

According to authorities, investigators identified and charged multiple suspects following detailed police work that began with a stolen vehicle believed to have been used by the shooters immediately after the November 15 mass shooting.

The vehicle was later found set on fire at an undisclosed location in Newark, but detectives were still able to retrieve key evidence that ultimately led to the first arrest on November 26.

Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said the break in the case came through “old-fashioned police work,” crediting detectives for their persistence and investigative technique.

Officials have identified Almuta Thomas and the juvenile faces murder charges and several weapons-related offenses, including possession of handgun without a permit.

 Quayon Williams-King, is charged with:

  • Three counts of first-degree murder
  • One count of second-degree conspiracy to commit murder
  • Two counts of second-degree aggravated assault
  • One count of second-degree aggravated arson
  • One count of third-degree theft of a motor vehicle

Thomas along with a 16-year-old juvenile, are believed to have been among the shooters who opened fire on a crowd.

The November attack killed 10-year-old Jordan Vereen, 21-year-old mother Kiyah Mae Scott, and 19-year-old Masi Rogers.

Jordan’s 11-year-old brother and a 60-year-old man were also struck by gunfire but survived.

Investigators said they are not yet prepared to confirm whether this Chancellor Avenue shooting is connected to Wednesday night’s separate mass shooting on Clinton Avenue, where four people were shot — two fatally — inside a recording studio.
