Taejin Kim, 44, was sentenced Thursday by Madeline Cox Arleo in federal court in Newark to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.

She was also ordered to pay more than $2.2 million in restitution.

Kim previously pleaded guilty on June 11, 2025, to conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

According to court records and statements made during the proceedings, Kim participated in a scheme between October 2019 and June 2022 that submitted fraudulent and medically unnecessary claims to Amtrak’s health care plan.

Prosecutors said Kim allowed her professional license and business bank accounts to be used to facilitate the billing operation in exchange for a share of the proceeds.

Authorities said other members of the conspiracy recruited Amtrak employees by offering cash payments in return for access to their personal and insurance information.

The information was then used to submit false claims for services that were never provided or were not medically necessary.

Federal investigators determined that the conspiracy involved dozens of Amtrak employees and multiple health care providers.

Participants allegedly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash kickbacks to employees over the course of the scheme.

In total, Amtrak’s health care plan paid more than $11 million in fraudulent claims connected to providers involved in the conspiracy.

Approximately $2.25 million of those payments were tied to claims associated with Kim, according to prosecutors.

The investigation has led to charges against 19 individuals, all of whom have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
