Former MLB Player, Coach, Newark Native's Foundation Delivers Gift Cards to Students in Newark’s South Ward

On Sunday, the Bo Porter Foundation delivered gift cards to about 50 kids chosen by administrators at The George Washington Carver Elementary School in Newark's South Ward.

According to officials at the Bo Porter foundation, the event happened at the Bo Porter Complex, located at 328 Lyons Avenue, at 1 p.m.

Officials said the foundation chooses a different school each year, where they usually give away coats toys and have a pizza party with a Santa Clause, but because of COVID-19 and social distancing, they decided to give gift cards to the children.

Former MLB player, coach and Newark native Marquis Donnell "Bo" Porter was raised in the South Ward of Newark and is a Weequahic High School graduate. According to published reports, While in high school, Porter was an all-state performer in baseball, football and basketball.

According to the coronavirus pandemic, Bo Porter could not make the event this year but was available via Zoom to greet families, according to officials at his foundation.
