Five Accused of Killing 15-Year-Old Bystander in Paterson, Plead Not Guilty

Paterson

Five Paterson males charged with the death of 14-year-old Nazarah Bugg, who authorities said was a bystander when shots rang out on a Paterson street as a result of a rivalry between gangs from the city's First and Fourth Wards.

Shakeem Ricks, 21, Tyheem Mayfield, 23, Nyje Johnson, 20, Quajeir Culbreath, 17, and Jeavonte Dennis, 18, all of Paterson, were charged with the fatal shooting of Bugg, an innocent bystander, near a chicken restaurant on Sept. 20, 2014. In addition, the males are also facing attempted murder in connection to injuries sustained by a Bugg's 15-year-old friend, who was wounded in the shooting, and conspiracy to murder both victims.

In May it was announced that Culbreath, Dennis and Devonte Lewis - all minors at the time of the shooting - will be tried as adults on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

A total of ten people have been indicted in connection to the fatal shooting.
