Firefighters Rescue Arson Suspect in Two-Alarm Newark Fire

Newark Police officials are reporting that firefighters rescued Mr. Stephen M. Jones, 24, of Newark, who was arrested on a charge of arson today.

Police said, shortly after 3:30 p.m., firefighters responded to an Abinger Place residence on a call of a fire.

A second alarm was called at 3:47 p.m., with some 80 firefighters on scene. Jones was rescued after fleeing to the roof, where he was immediately arrested.

Jones and a firefighter were each transported to University Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Jones suffered burns to his hands and the firefighter sustained burns to his neck.

The fire was considered under control at 4:14 p.m. Four adults and one child have been relocated.

No other injuries have been reported
