By: Richard L. Smith

A fierce two-alarm fire tore through a multifamily building in Kearny on Sunday afternoon, drawing assistance from neighboring departments as crews worked to bring the blaze under control.

The incident began just before 2 p.m. in the 60s block of Davis Avenue, where multiple 911 callers reported a fire inside the structure.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke and flames rising from the basement and extending upward through the three-story building, prompting officials to immediately strike a second alarm.

Units from North Arlington and Kearny were among those providing support as crews stretched several lines and battled the flames.

Firefighters needed more than an hour to fully bring the blaze under control.

A search of the building revealed no serious injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
