Fire in Newark Home Reveals Illegal Marijuana Growing Operation; Arrests

Firefighters who put out a small in a Newark house reportedly found an illegal marijuana growing operation, authorities said on Tuesday.

According to a preliminary investigation, firefighters were called to a fire at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the teens block of Poinier Street. 

Upon arrival, crews found smoke showing from the house with the occupant out of the three-story vinal siding house. 

Officials said firefighters found the seat of the fire in the ceiling of the top floor apartment where firefighters extinguished the blaze. 

While investigating the cause of the fire, officials said firefighters requested Newark Police and a crime scene unit after they found over two dozen marijuana plants reportedly being grown inside the building. 

Two individuals were taken into custody and detained for manufacturing marijuana. Official charges have not been released at this time. 

Police have launched an investigation.
