Fire Destroys Newark South Ward Church While Parishioners Prepared to Feed the Needy

Newark fire officials are investigating a fire that broke out inside a church in Newark's South Ward this morning.

Firefighters were called to 295 Clinton Place after fire ignited inside the single story structure shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Heavy fire engulfed The First Way of the Cross church after someone left food cooking in preparation to feed the hungry on this Thanksgiving Day.

Firefighters were able to swiftly knock down the blaze but not before the church suffered extensive damage.

There were no injuries reported.
