Fire Damages Building Inside Newark Ironbound Park

Ironbound

Fire officials in Newark are looking into the possibility that an early morning fire that ignited a building inside a park in the city's East Ward was intentionally set.

According to preliminary reports, firefighters were called to the Riverbank Park located on Market Street (Somme and Van Buren streets) to investigate reports of a massive outside fire.

Fast responding firefighters arrived to find flames tearing through a building that is possibly used as a field house for the park according to preliminary reports.

Crews stretched several hose lines inside the park in an effort to get the blaze under control according to fire officials.

Firefighters were able to beat down the blaze then make entry into the building where a search for trapped and injured victims were negative.

The official cause of the fire is subject to an active and ongoing investigation.
