Fire Breaks Out Inside old Macy's Building in Downtown Newark

Newark

Newark fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that erupted inside a business in Newark's Downtown Wednesday night.

According to officials, at approximately 10 p.m., firefighters were called to 131 Market Street after witnesses reported fire inside the building.

Crews arrived and saw thick smoke coming from the Dollar General officials said.

Firefighters were able to make it inside the 9-story mixed occupancy building where they found the seat of the blaze that spread to an entire aisle of food and refrigerators in the establishment.

Officials credited firefighters for their swift response in extinguishing the fire that could have caused extensive and widespread, regional internet outages in the region.

A portion of the building serves as a critical internet hub to the New York Metropolitan area and houses thousands of significant web servers, including RLS Media's.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
