Fatal State Police Involved Shooting at Cranbury Service Station Under Investigation

CRANBURY, N.J. - The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a shooting this afternoon at the Molly Pitcher Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike in which a man was fatally shot by a state trooper.

According to the preliminary investigation, members of the New Jersey State Police were conducting an investigation at the Molly Pitcher Service Area when the subject was shot by the state trooper at approximately 2:45 p.m. The subject was inside a pickup truck when he was shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No troopers were injured.

The identity of the deceased man is not being released by investigators at this time. No further details of the shooting are being released tonight because of the ongoing investigation.

The shooting is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team.

Under an Attorney General Directive, the Shooting Response Team, made up of deputy attorneys general, detectives of the Division of Criminal Justice, and detectives of the State Police Major Crime Unit, are dispatched to the scene to handle investigations of shootings involving state troopers or officers employed by county prosecutors as detectives/investigators or members of county emergency response teams and task forces
