Fatal Shooting Under Investigation in Downtown Newark

Essex County authorities are investigating a shooting that left one person dead in downtown Newark overnight.

Newark Police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of 10 Hill Street sending police to the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m.

Several police units arriving at the scene found the unconscious and unresponsive victim suffering apparent gunshot wounds according to authorities.

Medical personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene according to a statement released to RLS Media by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office at 4:33 a.m.

Police are investigating if the shooting is connected to another to a walk-in shooting victim who arrived at University Hospital at around 12:55

According to preliminary reports, police want to speak to the driver of a white vehicle -possibly a BMW- that was last observed speeding from the scene immediately after the shooting.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the active and ongoing investigation.
