DEVELOPING: Fatal Injuries Reported in Newark Ironbound Building Fire

Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office were notified of a building fire that killed a person in Newark's Ironbound section Friday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, the late-night fire broke out inside a multi-family building located at 105 Magazine Street just before 11:15 p.m.

Fast responding Newark East Ward Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the top floor of a three-story building.

A second alarm was immediately called, with some 70 firefighters responding.

Officials say an adult male succumbed during the fire and 7 victims, including one child, were transported to University Hospital for treatment. Two victims are reportedly in critical condition.

The fire was considered under control in under an hour with 15 people relocated.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Fire Division Arson Unit.
